Rating: 2/4 --
...has little of the insinuating nature of the best film noir.

Development of the characters makes Tay Garnett's direction seem slowly paced during first part of the picture, but this establishment was necessary to give the speed and punch to the uncompromising evil that transpires.

Variety
The first half of the film is plenty interesting until it is overrun by an excessive morbidness in its second half. [Full Review in Spanish]

Part sultry romance, part mystery thriller, the movie continues to keep audiences involved with its edgy character relationships and unforeseen tensions.

Movie Metropolis
Turner has one of the best screen entrances in history; Garfield literally reels.
USA Today
Rating: 4/5 --
Whilst the Jack/Jessica version was entertaining it was seemingly only interested in 'pushing the envelope', this film doesn't need to do any of that - and doesn't - it just plays out the story, and that's gripping enough.
Moviehole
Rating: A- --
The movie is not a wild river but a humid delta of stagnant frustration and stymied movement, so it's all the more impressive that it's such a gripping spectatorial experience.

Description by OLDIES.com:
The sign outside the roadside diner says "Man Wanted." Drifter Frank Chambers knows the sign has more than one meaning when he eyes pouty, luminous Cora, the much-younger bride of the diner's proprietor.
Based on the same-titled novel by James M. Cain (Double Indemnity, Mildred Pierce), this quintessential film-noir classic combines studio-system gloss with Cain's hard-bitten tale of murderous attractions. John Garfield and Lana Turner give career-benchmark performances as Frank and Cora, illicit lovers who botch a first attempt to bump off Cora's hubby, pull it off, betray each other at trial and yet wriggle free. But their volatile tale does not end there. As the film's metaphorical title indicates, fate is sure to ring again.
Product Description:
The sexual chemistry between a drifter and a waitress at a roadside cafe is so intense that they will do anything to be together - even if it means killing the woman's husband.
