In spite of its obvious flaws (inferior animations), Jack the Giant Killer is movie magic that's rife with rich fantasy and winsome playfulness.

Although no classic like The 7th Voyage of Sinbad -- and missing that picture's true star, visual effects wizard Ray Harryhausen -- this is nevertheless rousing entertainment.

Creative Loafing
Description by OLDIES.com:
Forget about beanstalks. This "vivid fairy tale" (LA Herald-Examiner) brilliantly re-imagines the beloved fable as a rugged adventure that delights with "vigorous acting and excellent trick effects" (Halliwell's Film and Video Guide)! Reuniting the director and stars (Kerwin Mathews and Torin Thatcher) of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, this visual treat is a journey you'll want to take again and again!
Farm boy, Jack heroically rescues Princess Elaine from sorcerer Pendragon by slaying his bloodthirsty giant. But when Pendragon uses his evil powers to bewitch and imprison Elaine in his enchanted fortress, Jack must cross the ocean to brave dragons, two-headed ogres and an army of ghouls to save his lady love!
Product Description:
A stunning version of the tale that includes witches, dragons and sea monsters, this film introduced Fantascope's special effects photography that enabled animated puppets to add dimension and be combined with live action for the first time. An outstanding children's fantasy from the era that also brought the best work of Ray Harryhausen, the special effects master whose influence is evident here.

Classic Fantasy Fun

This is a decent hokey kid-quality fantasy film. The characters are a bit weak, but who cares? There are giants indeed. There are flagrant special-effects wonders such as spectral witches and boughts of flourescent ghost-fire, a stop-motion animation monster-on-monster battle, and a verse-speaking leprechaun.
