Paddy Chayefsky, the author of Marty, seems to have bitten off more than he can chew in this synthetic and overdrawn melodrama about a slum girl who attains stardom but is crippled emotionally in Hollywood.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Kim Stanley (Oscar nominee, Best Actress, 1964, Seance on a Wet Afternoon) plays Emily Ann Faulkner, whose unhappy childhood was dominated by dreams of Hollywood stardom. Escaping a disastrous first marriage and fleeing motherhood by leaving her infant child with her mother, Emily strikes out for fame and lands in the arms of an ex-prizefighter, Dutch Seymour (Lloyd Bridges), whom she marries and divorces. Love is just a step on the ladder to the top, and changing her name to Rita Shawn, the starlet also becomes the mistress of a studio executive. But fame, drugs or alcohol can't hold back the encroaching loneliness and feelings of emptiness in the actress's life. Newly remastered.
Product Description:
THE GODDESS, said to be loosely based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, is the story of a young woman destined from childhood on to be adored by millions but unhappy in her own life. Patty Duke plays Emily Ann Faulkner as a young, friendless, fatherless rural southern girl whose mother is indifferent to her. As a teenager, Emily Ann, played by Kim Stanley, remains a loner but with one small exception--boys dote on her, drawn by her beauty and her powerful aura of feminine sexuality. Emily Ann marries young but leaves her first husband when she meets a young prizefighter. She becomes an actor and her star rises rapidly until she hits the heights of fame--and the depths of anguish.
Adapted by three-time Oscar-winning screenwriter Paddy Chayevsky from his own stage play, THE GODDESS is an in-depth character study, an incisive look at Hollywood, and a social commentary on fame, fortune, and sex. Stanley, a celebrated stage actor in her first film role, gives a sublime and heart-wrenching performance in one of the best films ever made about Hollywood.
