TOMATOMETER
3.5 stars out of 4 -- The film weaves a spell with its rhythms, sometimes slow, sometimes fast, all accompanied by a vivid and haunting sound design.
RogerEbert.com
Shot by Beshir herself in sumptuous, tissue-textured black and white, FAYA DAYI is predominantly a mood piece that seeks to evoke the leaf’s own perception-altering properties.
Variety
Shot in a rural Ethiopian town, the tone poem FAYA DAYI settles into a trance-like flow.

[M]esmerizing....A nonfiction work of sensory immersion that’s part anthropology, part poetry.
Hollywood Reporter
Product Description:
Investigative filmmaker Jessica Beshir plunges deep into Harar, a secluded, walled community in Ethiopia's subtropical highlands, seeking traditional practitioners of the khat ritual. Raw footage unveils the significance of the khat leaf to generations of Sufi Muslims, as chewing the leaf enhances spiritual connectivity during religious meditation. Yet as the surrounding world transitions to a more globalized economy, khat plays a critical role in Ethiopia's cash crop industry, irrevocably altering the nation's relationship to khat.
