Rating: 3/5 -- Southpaw is the film equivalent of a Quattro Formaggi pizza, enjoyable to those with the right palette but lacking the necessary ingredients to truly dazzle. Full Review

Rating: 2.5/4 -- It may be less than the sum of its parts, but taken on their own, those parts often hit all the right notes. Full Review

Rating: 7/10 -- Gyllenhaal is Oscar-worthy as the struggling lefty. The huge emotional swing required for the part is handled with ease under his calm demeanor. Full Review

3 stars out of 4 -- The increasingly remarkable Jake Gyllenhaal transforms himself yet again as Billy Hope, a boxing champion near the end of his career.

Jake Gyllenhaal undergoes yet another startling physical transformation in SOUTHPAW....He grunts and punches and scratches and glares it in, bleeding copiously in set pieces that thud and splatter with woozy, percussively potent verisimilitude.

Product Description:

Jake Gyllenhaal stars as troubled boxer Billy Hope in this high-stakes drama from director Antoine Fuqua and SONS OF ANARACHY creator Kurt Sutter. At the height of his fame and success, Hope is convinced by his loving wife Maureen (Rachel McAdams) to retire from the sport in order to spend more time with the couple's daughter Leila (Oona Laurence). On the night of his retirement announcement, a rival boxer calls out Hope and an altercation breaks out, killing Maureen. Hope's self-destructive behavior worsens, and Leila is taken away by child services. In order to redeem his life and get his daughter back, Hope must return to boxing under the tutelage of hardened trainer Titus "Tick" Willis (Forest Whitaker).
