Like the best of Frank Capra's films... Hearts of the West unabashedly sides with the angels and makes no apologies for its lack of sophistication or cynicism. Full Review

Rating: B+ -- Jeff Bridges is terrific in Zieff's still undervalued satirical tribute to B-westerns and filmmaking of yesteryear. Full Review

[A] witty and affectionate tribute to the pioneering days of movie-making.

The jokes may not make you guffaw, but are carried out with a subtle, understated sense of timing and characterisation that will surely leave you with a quietly satisfied smile stretching from ear to ear. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

Iowa farm boy Lewis Tater has a brainstorm: instead of continuing the correspondence courses that are learnin' him to write cowboy novels, he'll travel to the out-West school itself and soak up the campus atmosphere first hand. He arrives to find the school is a postal box. Write 'em, cowboy.

Tater's adventures don't stop there in an acclaimed tumbling tumbleweed of a film that has him earning his spurs in the yippie-yi-o of '30s "B" Westerns, complete with a veteran sagebrusher (Andy Griffith), a savvy script girl (Blythe Danner) and a hilariously inept director (Alan Arkin, the New York Film Critics Award choice as the year's Best Supporting Actor). Jeff Bridges plays Tater, a likable pilgrim as fresh-faced and innocent as Bridges' decades-later Rooster Cogburn in True Grit is worn and wise.

Product Description:

A movielover's movie starring Bridges as a young man who moves to Hollywood in the '30s with hopes of becoming a writer of western pulp novels. Instead he finds himself in front of the camera in cowboy films. Loosely based on the unlikely cowboy stars such as Tom Mix who literally rode onto sets as cowpokes and rode off as stars.
