Rating: 3/5 -- The East is an unrelenting condemnation of the Netherlands' misguided attempt to return its colonial outreach to a time long gone while hitting most (if not all) of the "doomed war" niche genre movie tropes without ever actually teetering into cliche. Full Review

Product Description:

Co-written and directed by Jim Taihuttu, this historical war drama takes place in 1946 Indonesia when it was still known as the Dutch East Indies colony. Dutch troops are deployed there to quell the rising national revolution. Young soldier Johan (Martijn Lakemeier) finds himself enamored with the ideas, philosophies, and leadership of Dutch officer Raymond Westerling (Marwan Kenzari) whom he follows, emulates, and obeys. However, when their counterinsurgency efforts begin purging operations on Sulawesi province, Johan suddenly questions the presence and purpose of their military actions.
