Weird and random without being particularly memorable, and it's very difficult to feel even a little bit sad that Toho never bothered trying to get Kong back after this picture.

Colorful, cartoonish fun, with an improved Toho Kong who eventually battles a 'robot Kong' created by evil Dr. Who (Hideyo Amamoto), variously described as 'an Oriental skeleton,' 'an international Judas' and 'a devil who lies like a gutter rat.' Ouch.

King Kong Escapes
Movie Lover: Sherman Lundy from

King Kong Escapes is a joint effort from Japan's Toho studios (creators of Godzilla) and Rankin-Bass (of Rudolph The Red-Noses Reindeer and Frosty The Snowman fame). In fact, the movie is based on the Rankin-Bass King Kong cartoon series from 1966.
The movie is total eye candy that could have only come out of the colorful 1960's. It views like a live action cartoon, a spy movie (with a James Bond-like supervillan subplot), and it features Robot Kong, one of the most clever giant monster creations to emerge from the Toho stables at the time. Not to be missed!
