Entertainment Reviews:
Van Bebber shows a desperate, marginalized mind-set that remains virulently alive. Crucial.
Rolling Stone
Rating: 1.5/5 --
The less-than-persuasive result is like mediocre leftover psychedelic '60s underground cinema.

Titillation and drive-in exploitation tactics are readily employed to keep the viewer watching, with a filmmaking approach coasting along in a psychedelic documentary mode.

Helter Skelter is a song by the Beatles, a slogan adopted by the Charles Manson 'family' and a description of how disorganized The Manson Family is.
St. Paul Pioneer Press
Rating: 0.5/4 --
There's no real journalism here, just the sort of appalling revisionism that can turn a bloodbath into a beach party.

Description by OLDIES.com:
On a ranch outside of Los Angeles, the dream of the "Love Generation" is transforming into something evil. What was once an oasis of free love and acid trips has become ground zero for a madman's paranoid visions. An average group of kids, the "Family," become engulfed in a delusional world where torment and slaughter are considered the path to righteousness.
Director Jim VanBebber (Deadbeat at Dawn) delivers a dizzying, rapid-fire vision of the sex and violence that unifies the misguided group, a group hell-bent on executing the brutal vision of its leader, Charles Manson. You've seen the story through the eyes of the law. Now witness it through the eyes of The Manson Family.
Product Description:
This dramatization of the notorious hippies-gone-wrong saga of the Manson Family was 15 years in the works. Directed by underground cult auteur Jim Van Bebber, it is an unflinching, accurate, and original presentation of the familiar, brutal tale. Marcel Games delivers a believably seductive portrayal of the cult leader, blithely easing a group of love generation teens into a life of acid-soaked orgies, gang rape, and ultimately murder. Audiences glimpse the methods by which all outsiders were made to seem less than human, and thus murder victims on the path to spiritual salvation. Van Bebber frames the story through a documentary being put together by a trashy television journalist, so that the story unfolds through interviews with home movie footage; present-day interviews with former cult members; and dramatization to tell the story. The result is an unremitting and unforgettable horror that manages to be strangely beautiful and totally trashy at the same time. Gritty and confrontational, the complete investment and vision of the director is in evidence at all times.
