TOMATOMETER
A scene on a train, in which the police stalk the rebels before a gun battle erupts, runs more than 20 minutes, all of them tense. A bomb-planting scene, set to Ravel’s 'Bolero,' is almost as taut.
New York Times
A filmmaker as attuned to detail and process as a watchmaker, Kim Jee-woon allows the machinations to build up and play out in inexorable yet unpredictable fashion.
Los Angeles Times
Kim’s preference for exteriorizing all of his character’s suspicions and turmoil -- for making the internal into something more graphic by transferring its energy into bullets, wounds, and time bombs -- gives it a sensational, two-fisted flavor.-- Grade: B+
A.V. Club
3 stars out of 4 -- THE AGE OF SHADOWS is about a man caught between country and duty; decency and obligation. It is about people in a time in which black and white lost their meaning, and everything blended to the gray of shadow.
