Rating: 2/5 --
Aside from a few strong performances and some solid period design, Rise to Power is a round, silver sleeping pill.

Even by the notoriously undemanding standards of direct-to-vid spin-offs, Carlito's Way: Rise to Power is conspicuously underwhelming.
Variety
Rating: 2/4 --
Writer-director Michael Bregman (son of Martin, who produced both films) keeps things moving briskly on the way to an improbably happy ending.
New York Post
Rating: 2/10 --
...a horrible, horrible movie.

...a legitimate piece of work (and not just a sleazy attempt to milk the popularity of the original).

A produção barata compromete o visual e a reconstituição de época e Hernandez, embora bom ator, é irregular em sua tentativa de imitar Pacino. Ainda assim, os personagens (Van Peebles, em especial) e a trama são interessantes.

Product Description:
An all-star cast is featured in this prequel of CARLITO'S WAY, originally a Brian dePalma film starring Sean Penn and Al Pacino. Set in Spanish Harlem, this version stars Jay Hernandez, in a star-making performance, as Carlito, who is on a comet-like ascent to the top of a successful crime ring. But being a kingpin takes a lot of support and the loyalty of a posse of complicated and violent friends, played by seasoned actors Mario Van Peebles, Luis Guzman, and the multi-talented P.Diddy, who proved his fine acting chops in the Broadway play, A RAISIN IN THE SUN.
