Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: C+ --
By today's standards the film is naive and amateurish, but in 1943, it was one of the most scandalous features Hollywood has made due to Howard Hughes brilliant campaign to exploit Jane Russell's buxum.

Howard Hughes' long-awaited celluloid interpretation of the life, love and legend of Billy the Kid approaches its chore of chronicling with more regard to historical authenticity than most of the countless predecessors of similar theme.

There are only two reasons why anyone was intrigued with this film...can you guess?
Film Threat
Rating: 3/5 --
The film would be G-rated today, but at the time, that hint of skin was enough to send people scampering for a little water to put on their brow.
Filmcritic.com
One of the weirdest westerns of all time, reflecting the eccentricities of its producer and credited director, Howard Hughes.

Stagey, not that well written, acted or directed (by Howard Hughes) western. More infamous than good.

Surprisingly, this minor, off-beat western didn't turn out that bad.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, and Doc Holliday ride again in Howard Hughes epic 1943 western, but the character youll remember most is sultry country vixen Rio McDonald. Hughes nationwide search for an actress to play Rio resulted in the film debut of Jane Russell, whose natural assets were allegedly helped by a special bra designed by Hughes. When The Outlaw finally received a nationwide release in 1946, its success vindicated Hughes and made Russell a star. As for Hughes infamous bra, Russell said in her 1988 memoir, I never wore it, and he never knew.
