Rating: 4/5 -- The Birth of a Nation is brutal and sad and difficult to watch at times. However, it also shines a light on a dark time in our nation's history and on a story that too many of us know precious little about. Full Review

With a fresh set of eyes, Parker effortlessly brings this past into the present and although many films dealing with slavery are lauded as courageous and inspirational simply for being, with "Birth of a Nation," he's actually made one that is. Full Review

Casting himself turns out to be his best choice as a filmmaker....He delivers a performance here of slow-simmering conviction; we can see the will to resist developing behind Turner’s eyes, a quiet storm building scene by scene.

Product Description:

This historical drama recounts a real-life slave revolt that occurred in 1831 Virginia, led by a black preacher named Nat Turner (Nate Parker). Turner is ordered by his master (Armie Hammer) to tour a number of local plantations, delivering sermons to the other slaves that will urge them against violence and any thoughts of rebellion. However, he is so appalled and sickened by the horrors he sees during his travels that he is eventually moved to fight back against the evils of slavery. Aja Naomi King and Gabrielle Union co-star. Parker wrote, directed, and stars in THE BIRTH OF A NATION, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.
