'70s romantic drama about black family has cursing, violence

Well-intentioned but not very compelling as drama or romantic comedy, Claudine bears the distinction of being one of few 1970s films to offer a black femme a lead role, a single mom of six on welfare for which Diahann Carroll received an Oscar nomination.

A rather simple love story about two experienced and jaded adults.

...Claudine is never quite able to become anything more than a highly dated product of its time...

Product Description:
Claudine (Diahann Carroll) is a single mother raising six children in the projects of Harlem. What little money she earns comes directly from a rich family for whom she keeps house. Struggling to make ends meet, she resorts to welfare. Claudine works to keep her dignity in the face of the humiliating hoops the welfare system--a system created precisely for women like her--forces her to jump through. She finds grace and romance in a pleasant garbage collector (James Earl Jones). Falling in love, the two work together to fight societal hypocrisy and to keep Claudine's family unit afloat.
Released in 1974 during blaxploitation's prime, CLAUDINE offered a more humanistic view of the black American experience. The independent feature showed African-Americans in a light they would not regularly be seen in for at least another decade. In addition to its warm depiction of ghetto romance, the film is also remembered for the soundtrack featuring Curtis Mayfield and Gladys Knight and the Pips. Diahann Carroll earned an Oscar nomination for her lead performance.

Claudine- A Film To Remember!
Movie Lover: Robert Velez from

Claudine is very unique! The excellent acting and soundtrack proved to be a big box office hit in 1974! Everyone thought Claudine would be classified as a blaxploitation film however Claudine dealt with no murders or stereotypes just reality! This charming movie holds up very well today for it involves a poor family trying to make ends meet with sincere drama and humor! The ending is my favorite part as you see the whole family walks down a Harlem street with no cares in the world and feeling very happy and proud! Claudine has stood the test of time with lots of smiles and laughter!
