Ozus' World Movie Reviews
Although heavily in debt to the late Damon Runyon for its world of warmhearted hoodlums, this is a brisk and beguiling comedy.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Anne Leeds (Jean Simmons) is a schoolteacher looking for part-time work. She lands a job as a secretary at a nightclub, working for two partners: Rocco (Paul Douglas), a nice, decent type of guy who has Anne's best interests at heart, and Tony (Anthony Franciosa), a handsome swinger for whom Anne falls, much to Rocco's chagrin.
Product Description:
Duke Ellington, Walter Kent, Richard Rodgers, and Lorenz Hart are some of the outstanding songwriters who contribute to THIS COULD BE THE NIGHT, a sweet and funny romance about a schoolteacher, Anne Leeds (Jean Simmons), who gets a part-time job as a secretary in a nightclub owned by ex-bootlegger and horse player Rocco (Paul Douglas) and his partner, Tony Armotti (Anthony Franciosa). On the first night, Anne manages to get herself fired by Tony, but Rocco insists that she returns. She does and after a brief period makes herself the most useful and popular member of the club, helping busboy Hussein Mohammed (Rafael Campos) pass his algebra examination and dancer Patsy St. Clair (Neile McQueen) to get a stove to cook on. But she can't win over Tony, who takes a love 'em and leave 'em approach to women, which makes her furious. When Anne and Tony fight, however, sparks also fly, and the two soon find themselves in love--and in a mess with another club run by rival gangsters. Taking a cue from GUYS AND DOLLS, this fun-loving film puts a new twist on love's power to change.
