The film came to an abrupt untidy end, but Mr. Conrad Veidt and Mr. Donald Caitlin brought to the screen a devilish ruthlessness and a mean cowardice which even the trivial plot about a stolen picture couldn't cramp. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

Set against the backdrop of a trans-continental train journey, "Rome Express" delivers a gripping narrative steeped in tension, echoing the suspenseful style reminiscent of Hitchcock. As a motley crew of strangers, including thieves and blackmail victims, find themselves thrust together onboard, the atmosphere crackles with intrigue. Serving as a precursor to numerous successful train thrillers, such as "The Lady Vanishes," this film remains an iconic gem of 1930s British cinema. Notably, it paved the way for similar tales of suspense and mystery. Its influence extends to the remake "Sleeping Car To Trieste."

Directed by Walter Forde and featuring Esther Ralston and Conrad Veidt in leading roles, "Rome Express" unfolds from a story by Clifford Grey, with a screenplay crafted by Sidney Gilliat. The narrative revolves around a European express journey to Rome, weaving together a tapestry of characters, including thieves, adulterers, blackmail victims, and even an American film star. Garnering acclaim, the film clinched the American National Board of Review award for Best Foreign Film.

Filmed at the Lime Grove Studios in Shepherd's Bush, the production boasts meticulous attention to detail. Art director Andrew Mazzei's sets provide a rich backdrop, complemented by Gordon Conway's thoughtful costume design. "Rome Express" stands as a testament to expert storytelling and visual craftsmanship, leaving an indelible mark on cinematic history.
