3.5 stars out of 4 -- Bellocchio’s tragicomedy is still one of the first unmissable movies of the year since it’s both bigger and more intimate than it seems.

Rating: 3.5/5 --
There's a sharper film lurking somewhere insider... But those wanting a more detailed exploration of organized crime in Italy - and the mental trauma it inflicted on soldiers and civilians alike - would do well to make time for Bellocchio's latest.

Austin Chronicle
Rating: 4/5 --
A legitimately Italian Mafia movie with memoirs, might, mayhem and a running time at least an hour shorter than 'The Irishman.'
Your Movies (cleveland.com)
A sturdy if somewhat uninspiring Mafia biopic.

Its most valuable asset is actor Pierfrancesco Favino. He packs serious intensity into his portrayal of Tommaso Buscetta...

Rating: 4/5 --
Show me a classic cosa nostra saga that doesn't affirm the importance of family and... well, I'll show you Marco Bellocchio's The Traitor, everything one hoped The Irishman would be but wasn't.

It’s clearly made by a master filmmaker questioning the nature of repentance...

Product Description:
In 1980's Sicily, mob bosses clash in violent disputes over control of the narcotics market. Mafioso Tommaso Buscetta (Pierfrancesco Favino) heads to Brazil to lie low, watching the violence erupt from afar until the wars ultimately claim the lives of his family. Running out of options after being deported to Italy, Buscetta strikes a bargain with Judge Giovanni Falcone (Fausto Russo Alesi) to take down the Cosa Nostra from the inside as the first Sicilian mafia pentito. Based on true events. Written and directed by Marco Bellocchio; co-starring Luigi Lo Cascio and Maria Fernanda Cândido.
