Rating: 6/10 -- War is hell and we know that, but The Yellow Birds wants to show how war lingers. That gives The Yellow Birds an emotional edge. Full Review

3 stars out of 5 -- [Moors] excels at creating mood. He has a nose for unorthodox camera placement, shooting from the inside of mailboxes or roving around the sides of convenience stores as the painted brick walls take on an inexplicably ominous quality.

Rating: 2.5/5 -- Although the cinematography is beautiful and the film has a lot of potential, it's far too slowly paced and doesn't have enough depth for the heavy material it takes on. Full Review

It's not only that The Yellow Birds doesn't have anything new to say, but that it's playing movie karaoke with other, better war movies. Full Review

Rating: 2/5 -- The Yellow Birds doesn't say much of anything outside of the mundane. The trio of young men at its center are compelling enough, but the entire ordeal feels like a mash-up of countless other movies. Full Review

Talent on both sides of the camera can't quite pull together this cerebral, introspective examination of the psychological trauma of military combat. Full Review

Making a late appearance in the Iraq War movie cycle, the impressively acted "The Yellow Birds" manages to leave an affecting mark even as it constantly struggles to find a distinctive voice of its own. Full Review

Product Description:

Two young soldiers are forced to endure the brutality and horror that war creates firsthand in this drama from director Alexandre Moors. Bartle (Alden Ehrenreich), who made a promise to protect his teenage friend Murph (Tye Sheridan) before departing for Iraq, looks to survive the fighting and grueling day-to-day conditions while also dealing with the stern, unforgiving Sergeant Sterling (Jack Huston), who is haunted by his own demons. Jennifer Aniston co-stars as Murph's mother, Maureen. Based on Iraq War vet Kevin Powers' 2012 novel.
