Unfortunately, Mr. Sidney and his scriptwriter, Irving Brecher, have allowed the essence of this spirited musical comedy of Michael Stewart to get away from them. Full Review

Rating: 3.5/5 -- Innocent-yet-sexy Ann-Margret is perfectly cast as the teenybopper, Van Dyke is winning in one of his few lead feature film roles, and Paul Lynde hilariously conveys a father's inability to understand teenagers and rock music. Full Review

Rating: 4/5 -- Underrated satirical musical that has contributed more to popular culture than many people are aware of. Full Review

This enjoyable timepiece is notable today for its peppy score, energetic dancing, and for having made a star of the extremely nubile Ann-Margret, 22 passing for 16. Her fresh, wholesome eroticism fairly bursts off the screen. Full Review

Rating: 4/5 -- A wonderfully energetic and colourful adaptation of the smash Broadway hit, satirising the traumatic induction of one Elvis Presley into the US Army. Full Review

[Bye Bye Birdie] had an apple-cheekiness about it on the stage that seems slightly worm-eaten on film, and the result is more goof than spoof. Full Review

    Product Description:

This entertaining musical, based on the Broadway hit inspired by the hysteria surrounding Elvis Presley's induction into the army, traces the shock waves a drafted rock & roll star, Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson), creates when he comes to a small town to kiss adoring fan Kim McAfee (Ann-Margret) good-bye on national TV. A fiesty secretary, Rosie DeLeon (Janet Leigh), has put the whole plan in motion, hoping that Birdie will sing a song composed by her beau, Albert Peterson (Dick Van Dyke), enabling Rosie's boyfriend to finally break free of his domineering mother (Maureen Stapleton) and marry her. Meanwhile, Kim's new steady, Hugo (Bobby Rydell), is less than pleased about the spotlighted embrace, as are her parents (Paul Lynde and Mary LaRoche)--at least until they get in on the action too. Ed Sullivan appears as himself, Ann-Margret is her usual perky, gyrating self, Van Dyke amply displays his wealth of talents, and Lynde and Stapleton nearly steal the whole production with their hilarious supporting roles. Director George Sidney, who would soon collaborate with the real King in the Presley tour de force VIVA LAS VEGAS, tightens the Broadway original without losing any of its verve and charm to create a rollicking uptempo joyride through a candy-colored early 1960s pop-culture landscape.

Description by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment:

Lots of laughs and great songs have made this all-time favorite based on the hit Broadway show one of the most memorable musicals of all time. When rock star and teenage heart-throb Conrad Birdie gets drafted, the nation's teenagers go haywire and Conrad's manager, Albert (Dick Van Dyke), faces unemployment. So Albert and his girlfriend (Janet Leigh) organize a nationwide contest in which one lucky girl wins a farewell kiss from Conrad on the Ed Sullivan Show. Kim McAfee (Ann-Margret) turns outto be the lucky teenager and Conrad's whole entourage moves into her quiet, Midwestern home much tothe chagrin of her ever irritable father (Paul Lynde) and her jealous boyfriend (Bobby Rydell). Theresult is chaos and a series of hilarious romantic complications.

Great musical. Movie Lover: from Jackson, TN US -- June, 29, 2010

I love this movie. I grew up in the 60's and I remember when they showed this movie on television. I know every one the songs that was performed. And **** Van Dyke was very good in this. If you like rock and roll, please watch this. You'll fall in love with the characters. And it's pretty funny, in a silly kind of way. I plan to purchase it while it's on sale. And I will watch it over and over again.
