There's a lot of these bump in the night moments though, each one less original than the last.

[Sigismondi] lavishes the final result with atmosphere, conjuring creaking floorboards, dismal paintings and manky mannequins that all aim to keep you on edge.

This pedestrian ghost story plods along in a vaguely competent manner until a thoroughly muddled ending makes the whole experience pointless.

Product Description:
Director Floria Sigismondi's horror mystery puts a modern spin on Henry James' 1898 novella "The Turn of the Screw." It stars Mackenzie Davis, Finn Wolfhard, and Brooklynn Prince. A young woman (Davis) relocates to a Gothic estate in rural Maine to serve as a governess to two young orphans. She soon learns that there is something strange and sinister about the mansion and the children under her care.
