As a major uprising occurs in their homeland, Chinese immigrants prepare to smuggle arms into China, a shipment the loyalist Fen Sha (Warner Oland) will do whatever it takes to stop. In need of money to dispatch the munitions, Dr. Dong Tong (Lewis Stone) offers in marriage his daughter Lien Wha (Helen Hayes), promising to sell her to the highest bidder. Calling off her engagement to student Tom Lee (Ramon Novarro), Lien Wha sacrifices her happiness and is sold to Fen Sha, unaware that he intends to kill those she loves and put an end to their plans.
