Rating: 3/4 -- Three of the stars of the 1931 horror classic Dracula popped up the following year in this nifty little B flick that not only functions as an engaging murder-mystery but also doubles as a peek behind the scenes at a small-scale movie studio. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

When an actor in a mystery film called The Death Kiss ends up killed during a drive-by shooting scene, the film's screenwriter Franklin Drew (David Manners) takes it upon himself to investigate. Among the suspects are an actress named Marcia Lane (Adrienne Ames), who is not only the dead actor's widow but also the screenwriter's lover, and Joseph Steiner, an arrogant studio executive played by Bela Lugosi. In this behind-the-scenes murder mystery, the film's director Edwin L. Martin reunites David Manners and Edward Van Sloan with the brooding intensity of Lugosi in ways surprisingly different from their classic collaboration in Dracula. Barringer and Kahn's screenplay of back-stage Hollywood is an early instance of blurring the line between reality and cinema. The end result is an overlooked classic murder mystery which is surprisingly intriguing and thoroughly entertaining. The startling color-tinted sequence is as effective today as it was in 1933.

Product Description:

Horror icon Bela Lugosi stars in a murder mystery that takes place on a Hollywood movie set. While filming a drive-by shooting in a movie called "The Death Kiss," leading man, Myles Brent, is discovered dead. The film's producer (played by Lugosi) believes the incident to be an accidental death, but then investigators discover a real .38 bullet at the crime scene. Because Brent was a ruthless playboy who broke many hearts, there are a number of possible suspects investigated during the course of the film. When the film's leading lady (Adrienne Ames), Brent's former wife, is accused of the killing, a screenwriter (David Manners) unravels the mystery to prove her innocence.

Bela's no mad scientist Movie Lover: from Middle Village, NY US -- March, 19, 2010

At least not in this movie. Playing en executive for a motion picture company, he does a good job of not being menacing. It's a good who-done-it. Lots of clues and not all are meant to lead you astray.

Death Kiss Movie Lover: from saint germain en laye, Yvelines FR -- May, 23, 2006

A good solid story for Bela fans, especially for one of his lesser known films as quite a few of those in that catagory, while not without merit do creak and clink a bit, so they might often be called, 'For Bela Fans Only'.

Death Kiss and Bela Movie Lover: from Pittsburgh, PA US -- July, 8, 2005

Of course I bought it for Bela. I was surprised at the role he played, and even more stunning is that David Manners is nowhere near the wooden-stiff actor he was in Dracula - he's charming, witty, funny. This was a great old period piece and an interesting mystery, to boot, taking place on a 1932 movie lot. Highly recommended.

Delightful! Movie Lover: from Toronto, ON CA -- February, 10, 2004

THE DEATH KISS is a highly enjoyable mystery film with a real spirit of fun. David Manners particularly seems to be having a wonderful time. Bela Lugosi’s role is fairly small but he is, as always, terrific and Edward Van Sloan is marvellous. There are a few unfortunate splices but otherwise the print is in very good shape. I’m quite pleased to add this charming movie to my DVD collection.

A LOT OF FUN Movie Lover: from Redding, CA US -- November, 26, 2003

I'm in total agreement with "kinovend", the earlier reviewer. This little gem was a pleasant and unexpected surprise.
Both the video and audio quality are much superior to most films of this era.
The acting and story line are captivating and well paced.

A gem of a murder mystery Movie Lover: from Grand Rapids, MI US -- April, 22, 2003

Here's a nice little poverty row film from 70 years ago which holds up very well. The acting is quite good, the leading man and lady are handsome/beautiful and the script and pacing are very good. Mr. Lugosi is on screen for about 5% of the total running time in a straight dramatic role. The camera work / lighting is good, as is the audio track. This DVD appears to have been made from a worn 35mm print, so expect to see splices, lines and occasional cue marks, but on the whole, the quality is very very good for a film of this vintage. (The reason someone has preserved this title is due to Mr. Lugosi's presence in it of course.)
