A screwball man turns monster movie with more turns and twists than an extended pretzel.
To be honest I wasn't expecting too much from this one, even with all the positive reviews. But this movie blew me away. You'd think by 1960 that it would be impossible for a mad scientist film to feel so fresh, but by moving the action to Japan it gave the whole scenario new life. The scientist is creepy, the ladies gorgeous, and the thrills & chills don't let up. It's a very creepy movie with several OMG scenes for 1960. Remember the Ash splits into scene in Army of Darkness? Ripped straight off from Manster. It has the atmosphere and heart of an old universal movie with lots of freaky Japanese twisted horror. The print is amazing too, don't think because it is so cheap that it probably doesn't look good. 5 star movie and 5 star print makes me a happy boy.
Go buy it, it's a must have!
This is the most bizarre horror movie you will ever see! And Alpha has done a great job again...All this for $5.95! Get this DVD!!!
I didn't expect much from this one, but was I in for a surprise. This is a really creepy exercise in psychological terror as Peter Dyneley (the voice of Jeff Tracy in Thunderbirds) goes slowly out of his mind(s). Dyneley is superb in a rare leading role and this cinematographer should get a pat on the back too. Recommended.
Dr. Suzuki (Satoshi Nakamura) is one of those well intentioned but horribly misguided scientists who is going to save Humanity whether we want him to or not. He has created a serum that can turn human beings into a "totally new species" but it still has a few bugs in it . . .and how! His wife and brother injected themselves and both mutated into ghastly monsters who have to be locked up. Finally Suzuki thinks he has everything figured out and tests his new and imporved drug on American reporter Larry Stanford (Peter Dyneley, who went on to be one of ther voices on "Thunderbirds Are Go!").
At first Larry just has a severe personality change, arguing with his boss (Norman Van Hawley) and neglecting his wife (Jane Hylton) for Suzuki's lovely assistant (Terry Zimmern) but it gets even worse. Soon his hand mutates into a hairy claw that likes to strangle monks and mutilate Geisha's. In the most memorable scene Larry discovers he now has an eye on his shoulder!
Soon he becomes a two headed monster which the trigger happy Tokyo cops (led by Jerry Ito who also appears in MOTHRA) want to shoot on sight.
Suzuki wants to inject Larry again and split him into two completely separate beings . . . but can he coax the mad manster back to his lab? And what about the erupting volcano in the background?
Surprisingly good with nice effects and quite a lot of tension and thrills. This is a Saturday night chiller that holds up very well, depite its age.
I loved 'The Manster'. It's an odd concoction, set in Tokyo with American and Japanese leads, it has everything; the sinister (and wierdly lecherous) Dr Suzuki, banjo-playing geisha girls, wierd buddhist ceremonies in wierder buddhist temples, a two-headed hairy beast romping through graveyards snapping policemen like twigs and the very effective and scary sight of the eye growing out of the Manster's shoulder.
If you're a fan of 60's horror, you'll love this movie!
A mad doctor injects a reporter with a serum that causes him to grow another head!! That is the basic plot behind this film. Congrats to Alpha once again!! I own about 50 DVD's from this company is the picture quality on here in top notch. High quality box art and high quality picture make this a winner for you if you're going to buy this film. Highly Recommended!!
