Description by OLDIES.com:
Alternately titled The Monster Of Venice, The Embalmer was frequently paired with the equally lurid chillers The Corpse Grinders and The Undertaker & His Pals for a triple feature that played the drive-in circuit in the late '60s. Movie-goers were asked to sign an "assurance certificate," indemnifying the theater and producers against death by fright or insanity resulting from viewing the pictures.

Just a couple of words to say that the real name of GIN MART,the main actor in this movie, is LUIGI MARTOCCI. Nobody could know it better, because he was my father. Unfortunately my dad passed away in 1988. This stupid mistake about my dad's real name originated in an italian movies book, printed in the early nineties and has never been corrected since. I'm doing my best to correct this gross mistake.Concerning the movie, although its evident very low budget limits, it has got something special, very convincing 'light and shade'games, some great moments of music, and a simple but fascinating plot. The original italian editing is far better than the american one. It is a longer version and dialogues are in many occasions very different(and less banal...), and the opening titles are just great!
Yet another Italian thriller about a madman stalking female victims. This one offers some very unique touches though. For one thing it takes place in Venice and the killer comes and goes via the famous canals. Our hero (Luigi Marturani using the alias "Gin Mart") spot the tracks left by the killers swim fins and at first thinks there is a sea monster on the loose! It would have been pretty good had the killer worn a sea monster costume but he does put on a monks robe and skull mask while in his underground lair and I guess two costumes would have been stretching a plot point.
Our madman murders women and keeps them in his underground collection. He does not do anything as old fashioned as covering them with wax though, he embalms them so they will stay "fresh". This time out the hero does a lot of work toward finding the killer but it is his girlfriend (Maureen Brown) who actually finds the mad maniac's hiding place and nearly makes herself
one his victims!
While there is no explicit violence some of the action is pretty brutal for its time (1969) and the killer's motivations remain very vague, though this might be the result of the dubbing.
The writer/director, Dino Tavella, only did one other film, the war drama UNA SPORCA GUERRA, which remains a very obscure, hard to find title.
