It retains the book's emotional punch and darker elements - the spectre of the gallows is a running motif - and presents them in a way likely to engage younger viewers without patronising them. Full Review

Rating: 79/100 -- A smorgasbord of urban decay, social disorder, and class conflict imbues the film with a potent sensuality Full Review

Certainly Polanski deserves our gratitude for obliging the cast not to sink their teeth too deep into Dickens' juicy dialogue. Full Review

Rating: 2/4 -- Great expectations are unavoidable when Roman Polanski takes on a Charles Dickens classic. Alas, his version of Oliver Twist fails to live up to them. Full Review

Product Description:

Born into a life of poverty, Oliver (William Miller) and his unwed mother struggle to survive. But after her death, things only get worse for the young boy as he suffers at the hands of Mr. Bumble--the sadistic overseer at a workhouse--and his hardscrabble peers. Soon Oliver escapes to London where a series of picaresque adventures with some colorful criminals teach him more than a few cruel lessons. The BBC produced this vivid adaptation of Charles Dickens's classic novel that runs for five episodes.
