[I]t is a remarkable tale not only because it's a true story, but one where a romance influenced the outcome of British and African history.

Ms. Asante addresses contemporary concerns via period romance, and her commitment to the romance is not a feint.

Rating: B -- It is very predictable but I was invested enough to find it entertaining. Full Review

Rating: 2/5 -- A United Kingdom is remarkably dry and clichéd and fails to find much depth in this story that defied one kingdom and united another. Full Review

3.5 stars out of 4 -- [T]o say that Oyelowo is giving one of his best and most electrifying performances in A UNITED KINGDOM -- that means something. He's set the bar high.

Rating: 3/5 -- With its solid performances, Asante's direction and Hibbert's screenplay, A United Kingdom is a beautifully told love story but its melodramatic tones simplify what was a historically complex relationship. Full Review

Despite the feeling that this couple feels a bit too heroic and strong enough to stand up to the Evil Empire, their love story rings true. They make an engaging couple whose faces both shine when on screen together. Full Review

Product Description:

Dramatization of the real-life romance between white Londoner Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike) and African law student Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo), who began their love affair in 1947 when Williams was unaware that Khama was the heir apparent to the throne of the Bamangwato tribe of the British protectorate of Bechuanaland (modern-day Botswana). After deciding to marry, the couple return to Africa so he can assume his royal duties, but their interracial marriage faces opposition from both Khama's family and neighboring South Africa, whose apartheid government leans on Britain to break up their union.
