Rating: 1/5 -- At best, the Malick method is a cinematic sacrament. At worst, it's a moronic, cringeworthy perfume commercial. Malick's new film, Song to Song, is his worst yet. An absolute shocker. Full Review

Rating: 2/5 -- We're left with gorgeous photography (Emmanuel Lubezki), a plotless plot and a sense that some transcendentalist Nashville may lurk here waiting to be discovered, though not - thanks - by me. Full Review

[There is] much here that’s exhilarating, including the film’s ambitions and its seriousness.

Rating: 3/5 -- Song to Song is slightly disappointing. Rooney Mara's voiceover only offers empty platitudes and Ryan Gosling's romantic hero is sweet and endearing but ultimately quite boring. Full Review

Rating: 3/5 -- There are some inspired visual flourishes and it is a film with its own weird stamina and momentum: sometimes exasperating, sometimes mesmeric. Full Review

Malick and his regular cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki, capture concert scenes in outdoor venues with thousands of people, and intimate scenes in gorgeously decorated homes where characters practice songs or noodle on a piano or guitar.

Stick with SONG TO SONG, and Malick’s elusiveness becomes surprisingly direct.....Difficult questions and answers are distilled to their philosophical essence.
