Recommended mainly to the more devoted Singleton fans, Baby Boy is pretty strong evidence of a filmmaker who still has plenty to say.

There's no cuddling this Baby Boy, a profoundly sad commentary on the vicious circle that continues to terminally plague our bewildered, impressionable and disadvantaged young urban black men.

What holds the movie together ... is Gibson's broodingly responsive performance.

Johnson and Rhames are superb as Jody's charming, hard-working mother and her ex-con boyfriend Melvin.

[Jody's] lessons on growing up and moving on never ring more than halfhearted and false.

The film is a bold examination of an aspect of African American life. There's no shortage of sex, violence, or urban realism.

Product Description:
In this tragic street drama, Baby is a young East L.A. gang banger who's only 11 years old when he's taken in by the local criminals and taught how to live like a villain. Soon enough, Baby finds himself in jail and, after a grisly seven-year sentence in prison, is back out on the streets as a young adult. With Baby angrier than ever, only his two childhood friends stand a chance at finally setting him on the right path.
Description by Lions Gate Home Entertainment:
BABY is the tragic tale of an Asian youth trapped in the seedy world of the hostess bars, pool halls and drug dens that characterize East LA gang life. Baby is a motherless 11-year-old with only an alcoholic father to raise him. His troubles multiply when he is taken under the wing of his gangster neighbors, who lead him down a path that lands him in Juvenile Hall for manslaughter. After seven violent, terrifying years in prison, Baby is ill-equipped to re-enter society and soon returns to a life of gangbanging and murder. Only his childhood friends, Petey and Samantha, offer him any hope of turning his life around before it's too late.
