Movie Lovers' Ratings & Reviews:
Based on 170 ratings.
This is another very satisfactory low-budget early 30's film where some care is taken to develop characterization. The gimmick of using lovers discovered at their tyrst as a stage play was very effective and actually had me going there for a moment. Most evolved in character of all was Michael, the elderly stage doorman who elaborately and pointedly tells off the arrogant actor who abuses him - despised by all, the womanizing "ham" got exactly what was coming to him in all respects, and it was very clever how he went from the suave thespian cooing endearments to his latest girlfriend as the curtain comes down, to a despicable lout who demands people in service address him as "Sir". As usual, I love the 1931 setting, the clothing, the social interacting as the mystery is examined - and again, memorable characters in this story, even the nasty cop who is equally vile and bullying to Michael the clever old stagehand, and in fact to everyone whom he questions. This movie does just about as well as any first-run major studio offering of its era.
