Rating: 2.5/4 -- This is a story largely made up of scenes of men talking in offices, but without the delicious and satirical sense of a whole-cloth gangster world set apart by its own rhythms and internalized rituals of violence ...

Kitano's considerable gifts as a screenwriter and stylist -- namely, his talent for staging violent outbursts and conveying narrative through elliptical cuts -- are enough to sustain the film as a twisty, cynical underworld yarn.

Rating: 2/5 -- The movie as a whole feels cynical and exhausted. Full Review

[The] actual physical violence is often less shocking than the scheming and betrayal that routinely shake up the traditional hierarchies behind these criminal enterprises.

The strategy and strategizing of "Beyond Outrage" ... feel like overkill (if you'll pardon the expression). Full Review

The tension between the past and the future leads to lots and lots of brilliantly edited (the genius of the movie) violence. In the end, no one loses and no one wins Full Review

Rating: 2.5/4 -- An intelligently composed, crisply edited, sometimes amusing but otherwise unremarkable cross/double cross gangster picture. Full Review

Product Description:

Newly released from prison and determined to go straight, former Yakuza boss Ôtomo (writer/director Takeshi Kitano) becomes a key pawn in an anti-gang detective's bid to destroy two prominent crime families in this sequel to the 2010 hit OUTRAGE. When the old guards of the Sanno crime family grow wary of the young executives' methods, crafty detective Kataoka senses an opportunity to pit the Sannos against their local rivals the Hanabishis. But first, Kataoka needs a catalyst in order to light the fuse on the bloody feud. Enter Ôtomo, the veteran gangster thought to be dead by most of his former partners in crime. In reality, Ôtomo has just emerged from prison, and he's ready to enjoy a peaceful retirement. Unfortunately for Ôtomo, that's not in the cards, and once he's back on the street, the countdown to chaos begins.
