Ocean's Eleven (2001, Color): Loosely based on the 1960 Rat Pack film of the same name, OCEAN'S 11 is a hi-tech crime comedy that features a top-notch cast. Con man Danny Ocean (George Clooney) has just been released from a four-year jail term and decides that his first order of business is robbing three Las Vegas casinos owned by the slimy Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia). To pull off this nearly impossible task, he quickly assembles an eclectic crew--including a card shark (Brad Pitt), a pickpocket (Matt Damon), an explosives expert (Don Cheadle), and an aging gambler (Carl Reiner)--and seeks financial backing from a freewheeling casino mogul (Elliott Gould) who holds a grudge against Benedict. However, it soon becomes apparent that Ocean has more at stake than money and his newly found freedom--his ex-wife, Tess (Julia Roberts), just happens to be Benedict's new girlfriend. Can Ocean steal back Tess's heart and more than a hundred million dollars at the same time?

Continuing an impressive streak of films that began with OUT OF SIGHT and THE LIMEY and exploded into even wider acclaim and popularity with ERIN BROCKOVICH and TRAFFIC, Steven Soderbergh helms this star-studded caper flick with a strong sense of style and humor. Clooney and Pitt, in particular, have a great rapport and both exude a suave, laid-back charm. Damon, Cheadle, Gould, and Reiner all provide excellent comic turns, while Garcia gives an appropriately sinister performance. The whole glittery package is topped off by David Holmes' engaging score, which ties together the sounds and moods of Hollywood past and present.

Ocean's Twelve (2004, Color): Back in slick style, OCEAN'S TWELVE reintroduces Ocean (George Clooney) and his perfectly trained team of con men, who are determined to take on Europe. Dividing forces to hit Paris, Amsterdam, and Rome, the heist-meisters move beyond casinos to tackle new objectives, one of which involves stealing a famous painting.

With OCEAN'S TWELVE, Steven Soderbergh re-teams with his high profile friends for another glamorous romp through the high-stakes underworld. Three years after Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and his crew robbed Las Vegas casino tycoon Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia) of one hundred sixty million dollars, Benedict has finally tracked them down. He gives them a two-week ultimatum to come up with the money or suffer the consequences. Knowing that the odds are stacked against them, the gang nonetheless heads to Amsterdam for a big heist. But what no one realizes is that ultra-smooth Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt) has ulterior motives for leading the gang to Amsterdam. Turns out his former flame, Isabel Lahiri (Catherine Zeta-Jones), is living and working there tracking criminals such as Ocean and French master Francois Toulour (Vincent Cassel), better known as "The Night Fox." Threatened by the universally admired eleven, Toulour challenges Ocean to a dangerous museum heist that will either make or break the gang once and for all. It's up to Tess Ocean (Julia Roberts) to fly into town and bail the boys out of trouble. Every frame of OCEAN'S TWELVE is bursting with gleeful energy, as is the film's soundtrack, provided by acclaimed musician David Holmes.

Ocean's Thirteen (2007, Color): The third installment of Steven Soderbergh's slick, star-studded heist series just might be the best, as Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and company pull off another elaborate caper, this time in the name of revenge. Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould), one of Ocean's original eleven, lies nearly comatose after a myocardial infarction brought on by shock. His dreams of regaining his former glory on the Vegas strip have been dashed by the dastardly Willie Bank (Al Pacino), with whom Reuben foolishly went into business to build the biggest and flashiest casino the the world has ever seen. Bank took Reuben for all he was worth, and now, the famously loyal thirteen won't rest until Bank has been brought down. They execute this noble cause through complex, daring, and brilliant machinations that make the most of everyone's talents, including Yen's (Shaobo Qin) acrobatics, Linus's (Matt Damon) acting abilities, and Basher's (Don Cheadle) heavy machinery. Virgil and Turk Malloy (Casey Affleck and Scott Caan) get a few hilarious moments as they brew up a revolution in a Mexican plastics plant, while Rusty (Brad Pitt) and Danny coolly preside over the action like omniscient, infallible deities, always about three steps ahead of the game. The villain's downfall is utterly satisfying due to the pure capitalist evil channelled by Pacino, while Ellen Barkin vamps it up as Bank's "cougar" of an assistant. The camaraderie of the thirteen lends heart to these cool criminals, best captured by the sappy letters Basher sends Reuben, which ultimately bring him back to life. Vegas is effectively captured through seamless editing and beautiful photography, with the trappings of uber-wealth making the fantasy even more fantastical.
