History is also peppered with matter-of-fact anachronism and stagy visual tableaus to fresh but not overwhelming effect.

In trading the American frontier for barren branch graveyards and facts largely for fiction, this stylized folk tale is patched together by the same needles that weave myths.

Pajiba
A star vehicle for young character actor George MacKay and a visual tour-de-force that gets high on its own look and sound.
RogerEbert.com
There are a couple of action scenes in TRUE STORY OF THE KELLY GANG that show off the director Justin Kurzel’s technical chops and eye for novelty.
New York Times
Kurzel’s roughhousing, ripely acted interpretation does full justice to the book’s rugged dirt-poetry vernacular and rich biographical particulars...
Variety
Rating: 3.5/4 --
The film is violent, absorbing, and a must for any western fan. Beautifully shot by cinematographer Ari Wegner. The cast is first-rate.

Product Description:
Set in late 1800s Australia, True History of the Kelly Gang tells the story of Ned Kelly (Orlando Schwerdt, George MacKay), the leader of one of the most prolific gangs Australia has ever seen. As a young child, Ned is exposed to poverty, familial strife, and oppression. His character is further developed when bushranger Harry Power (Russell Crowe) enters the picture and teaches him how to despise authority. As Ned matures and descends into near-madness, people start to view him as either a hero or a murderer. This adaptation of a Peter Carey novel is directed by Justin Kurzel.
