Entertainment Reviews:
4 stars out of 5 -- [A] dazzling and defiantly rogue western from director Justin Kurzel that plays with facts to get at a deeper truth about Ned Kelly.
Rolling Stone
Kurzel’s roughhousing, ripely acted interpretation does full justice to the book’s rugged dirt-poetry vernacular and rich biographical particulars...
Variety
Rating: B- --
But for all its real visual flair, it's hard not to feel that the film misses something crucial about Kelly in the end - trading machismo for manhood, and sensation for true history.

The truth is not something to be cherished in this fictionalized biopic.

Ozus' World Movie Reviews
What distinguishes this adaptation is the unintuitive focus of its interests. Kurzel, working from a script by Shaun Grant, pushes the dramatized-to-death details of Kelly’s outlaw days to the margins...
A.V. Club
How True History of the Kelly Gang broadens what we mean when we say the word "outlaw" is another step forward for Justin Kurzel in his cinematic investigation of what makes a man.

There are a couple of action scenes in TRUE STORY OF THE KELLY GANG that show off the director Justin Kurzel’s technical chops and eye for novelty.

Product Description:
Set in late 1800s Australia, True History of the Kelly Gang tells the story of Ned Kelly (Orlando Schwerdt, George MacKay), the leader of one of the most prolific gangs Australia has ever seen. As a young child, Ned is exposed to poverty, familial strife, and oppression. His character is further developed when bushranger Harry Power (Russell Crowe) enters the picture and teaches him how to despise authority. As Ned matures and descends into near-madness, people start to view him as either a hero or a murderer. This adaptation of a Peter Carey novel is directed by Justin Kurzel.
