Victoria and Abdul is a well above average biopic featuring a royal (Dame Judy) Dench at the top of her game. Full Review
Cinematic Considerations

Rating: 3/5 -- I don't believe Victoria & Abdul was meant to be presented on an investigative level and pass judgment about the past; it doesn't pretend to be responsible, which is why I didn't mind its familiar templates and young emotions. Full Review

Rating: C -- While Victoria & Abdul does tell the story of an inspiring friendship, it comes wrapped in an odious package of colonialist sentimentality. Full Review

Rating: 2.5/5 -- This tale of a young Indian servant who catches the eye of the old queen and ends up her favourite means well, but isn't enough of an irritant to the Establishment. Full Review

4 stars out of 5 -- Dench has once more made this iconic figure engagingly, relatably and all-too-fallibly human -- right down to her very pores.

Fatally shifts its focal gaze away from the viewpoint of Abdul to being told from the perspective of the head of the British Empire, which is a far less interesting angle. Full Review

Product Description:

An Indian clerk named Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal) travels to London to present Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) with a ceremonial coin for her Golden Jubilee. The pair form an unexpected bond upon meeting, but the lifelong friendship that develops is threatened by the disapproval of Victoria's inner circle. As the Queen contemplates what her life of service has meant and the restrictions it has placed on her, Abdul brings her joy as he indulges her fascination with the country she rules over from half a world away. Directed by Stephen Frears. Michael Gambon, Eddie Izzard, and Olivia Williams co-star.
