It sacrifices Studio Ghibli's hand-drawn style but it's the absence of the studio's usual emotional beats that's the bigger problem.

Time Out
Earwig and the Witch is a faithful adaptation but a mediocre Studio Ghibli film. And given the studio's outstanding record, a weak Ghibli film seems all the more unfortunate.

Earwig and the Witch is, by normal standards, a misfire-and by Ghibli's standards it's much worse.

Fans should give this film a chance, if only to hear Richard E. Grant's voice work. It is a delightful variation on a theme of Alice in Wonderland/Tabitha the Teenage Witch.

Most of Ghibli’s previous movies have instrumental scores, but this one feels more modern in its use of pop music...
Variety
[With] occasional lively visual touches, and a playfully out-of-character '70s prog rock score by Satoshi Takebe.
Hollywood Reporter
A strong-willed young heroine, a witch, a talking cat, cute magical minions: EARWIG AND THE WITCH has many of the familiar qualities of a Studio Ghibli film.

Product Description:
Directed by Gorô Miyazaki, this full-length animated feature from Studio Ghibli revolves around 10-year old Earwig, a precocious child who grew up in a unique orphanage where children can practically do things that are always forbidden of them. She was abandoned by her witch mother, but another witch, Bella Yaga, later adopts her. When she is taken to Bella's home, she finds out that she will serve as an assistant. Hardheaded Earwig agrees to abide by house rules if Bella teaches her how to do magic. Adapted from the novel by Diana Wynne Jones.
