Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: 4/5 --
Here is a seething piece of social-realist Southern gothic, featuring a powerful performance from a big and broodingly bearded Nicolas Cage.

Guardian
The most indelible scenes in David Gordon Green’s JOE, filmed in the backwoods of Texas, have the fierce clarity of illuminations glimpsed in a lightning flash.
New York Times
Rating: 2/5 --
The film turns out to be a sprawling disaster, something that not so much lacks direction, but actively opposes coherence on principle.

Green's regular cinematographer, Tim Orr, brings to the exteriors his characteristically ripe, rich palette.

A story of genuine emotions.

Rating: 4/5 --
Joe is a gripping drama with a powerful moral core, that has sympathy for those trying to make their way alone through the world, but doesn't give them much of a chance.

3 stars out of 4 -- If you need a reminder of what a fine, nuanced actor Nicolas Cage can be, take a look at JOE. This is the kind of artful character study that marked Cage's work in LEAVING LAS VEGAS, RAISING ARIZONA and ADAPTATION.
Rolling Stone
Product Description:
David Gordon Green's JOE stars Nicolas Cage as the title character, the foreman of a work crew hired to poison trees before they are cleared from land owned by people who plan to develop it. One day, 15-year-old Gary (Tye Sheridan) arrives at the worksite looking for a job for both himself and his alcoholic, shiftless father. Joe hires them both, but the self-destructive dad is quickly told never to return. Gary, however, earns his keep, and soon he begins to think of Joe as a father figure. However, Joe has a prison record, and a problem keeping his explosive anger in check, and when a local man develops a grudge against him, both Gary and Joe must take a stand. JOE screened at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.
