Rating: 3/4 -- Beautifully acted, The Railway Man is profoundly moving, and yet, somehow, its sentimental ending manages to be both unearned and predictable.

It begins as a spritely romance, transforms into a nightmarish POW drama, flirts with becoming a revenge fantasy, and ends like a human interest story. Along the way, The Railway Man accumulates some power and insight...

Rating: 2.5/4 -- The critical problems are an overbusy time-jumping script and reliance on the conventions of the trauma drama - flashbacks, fragmentation, distorted time and space - that prove more a barrier than a window into the character's inner lives. Full Review

[T]he performances are so strong and the ultimate catharsis that occurs is so palpable that it sneaks up on you with an unexpected emotional wallop.

Product Description:

Jonahran Teplitzky's drama THE RAILWAY MAN tells the true life story of Eric Lomax, a former POW from WWII. Decades after the war, Lomax (played as an older man by Colin Firth) is still haunted by the horrific tortures administered upon him by his captors. He discovers that his main captor is still living, and decides for his own good that he will confront his tormentor. James Irvine plays Lomax during his time as a POW, and Nicole Kidman portrays Lomax's love interest.
