Mary and Martha is fictional, but the characters have the blandness you generally find in docudramas.

While Swank and Blethyn make everything they're in more remarkable for their presence, the movie plays more like a based-on-fact Lifetime flick than an HBO work of fiction.

Mary and Martha is a little film with a big heart. While well acted and artfully shot, it suffers from message movie traps, which isn't to say I wasn't swept up in its good intentions.

Description by OLDIES.com:
From director Phillip Noyce and writer Richard Curtis, this uplifting HBO Films drama focuses on two very different women -- an upscale American interior designer named Mary (Hilary Swank) and a middle-class Englishwoman named Martha (Brenda Blethyn) -- who form an unlikely bond following the losses of their only children from malaria contracted in Africa. Battling their lingering grief and the strains on their marriages, the two work together to raise awareness of malaria, a preventable and treatable disease, while recovering their sense of purpose.
