The leisurely told cornball tale of frontier love makes for a pleasant and unassuming film.

It's a real charmer, held together by Mitchum's electric presence as the laconic interloper with a gently roving eye and a winning way with his guitar and songs.

Rachel and the Stranger may not be history precisely, but as a cinematic footnote it certainly is far more palatable than most texts.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Stoic backwoodsman Big Davey Harvey (William Holden) "buys" and marries a bondswoman, Rachel (Loretta Young), to care for and educate his motherless son. Neither the father nor son find much to appreciate in Rachel until Jim Fairways (Robert Mitchum), a guitar-strumming hunter, shows a romantic interest in her. Violent jealousy erupts between the two men, settled only after a spectacular raid on the Harveys' homestead by unmerciful Shawnee Indians. But which man will win Rachel's heart?
