Rating: 3/5 -- It's hard to play a good man doing the right thing. Saints are dramatically dull, but Estevez gets away with it here. Full Review

Estevez's drama gets a little preachy in the second half, but "The Public" is passionate about its cause and the cast... deliver like the pros they are. Full Review

Rating: 1.5/4 -- Alec Baldwin, Jeffrey Wright, Christian Slater and Gabrielle Union all look like they'd rather be somewhere else. Full Review

Rating: 4.5/5 -- There is something decidedly old-fashioned about the storytelling in The Public, but maybe there's truth to the idea that we need to understand and appreciate the past if we're ever going to be able to move forward together. Full Review

The canvas is broad, with lots of supporting characters and subplots, and while the writing is heavy-handed at times in the Golden Age of Television style, Estevez imbues the movie with a large and generous heart. Full Review

It's a beautifully shot and directed film that openly wears its heart on its sleeve as an ode to one of the last surviving bastions of free information and public space - the public library. Full Review

[Estevez] has assembled a stellar cast of great communicators around him to carry the day, including Alec Baldwin, Taylor Schilling, Jena Malone, Christian Slater and Michael K. Williams.

Product Description:

Emilio Estevez directs and stars as Stuart, a librarian who helps a group of local homeless people take refuge from a brutal winter night by staging a sit-in at the free public library. As Stuart and his co-worker Myra (Jena Malone) work to get these "patrons," led by Jackson (Michael K. Williams), situated, the library's security team calls the police. A misunderstanding combined with the eagerness of a politician (Christian Slater) and a TV reporter (Gabrielle Union) to advance their own agendas leads to their noble act being confused for a hostage situation.
