Cinemalogue
Can be more of a platform than a chronicle; its look at homophobia and gay marriage is a bit earnest and over-explained. Still, Takei provides a sharp lens through which to see ethnic and sexual minorities' progress in America's post-'50s popular culture.

Vue Weekly (Edmonton, Alberta)
3.5 stars out of 4 -- Writer-director Jennifer M. Kroot is smart enough to know she has a glittering diamond of a subject in Mr. Takei, so for the most part she keeps things straightforward...
Chicago Sun-Times
Rating: 3.5/4 --
To Be Takei is a celebration of a man of great resilience, infectious humor, a voracious appetite for the richness of the human experience, and the best laugh in the history of laughing.
Chicago Sun-Times
Another pleasant if disposable portrait.

While there's pathos and tragedy here, there's also good humor and human strength.

Celebrates Takei but blithely neglects to probe for any complexity in a man who has surely suffered much.

Product Description:
Jennifer M. Kroot's documentary TO BE TAKEI profiles the actor and activist George Takei, who became famous for playing Sulu on the original incarnation of STAR TREK. Decades later, he would become a proud and openly gay man who built a large fan base thanks in part to his appearances on Howard Stern's radio show, and he used his newfound fame to champion the cause of LGBT rights.
