TOMATOMETER
Total Count: 9
Rating: 3/4 -- Even though the film runs a brief 71 minutes -- finishing off with footage of Reno talking with New Yorkers on the street in the aftermath of 9/11 -- Reno shows enough gusto to make you a fan. Full Review
Combustible Celluloid
Feb 28, 2003
Rating: 3/5 -- If Reno is to the left of liberal on the political spectrum, her tough, funny, rather chaotic show isn't subversive so much as it is nit-picky about the hypocrisies of our time.
New York Times
May 1, 2003
Rating: 2/4 -- When [Reno] lets her radical flag fly, taking angry potshots at George W. Bush, Henry Kissinger, Larry King, et al., Reno devolves into a laugh-free lecture.
New York Post
May 2, 2003
[Reno] delivers a monologue that manages to incorporate both the horror and the absurdity of the situation in a well-balanced fashion.
Hollywood Reporter
May 8, 2003
The film delivers not just the full assault of Reno's immense wit and insight, but a time travel back to what it felt like during those unforgettably uncertain days. Full Review
Film Journal International
May 6, 2003
Rating: 3/5 -- Director Nancy Savoca's no-frills record of a show forged in still-raw emotions captures the unsettled tenor of that post 9-11 period far better than a more measured or polished production ever could.
TV Guide

What seems like a nut-on-a- bar-stool rant morphs into a triumphal evocation of the emotional-political bluster of that time. Full Review

Product Description:

The events of 9/11 had a huge impact on the people of New York City. The city-dwellers subsequently developed many different coping strategies to help come to terms with what they witnessed that day. Filmmaker Nancy Savoca (DOGFIGHT) stumbled across female stand up comic Reno, and decided to make a film about her unique way of handling the events of 9/11. Reno infused humor into the sad events, and told a highly personal tale of what happened to her on that day. This stand up release offers her full performance, which is both moving and very funny in equal measures. Many firefighters and police officers have witnessed her act, using it as a cathartic way to deal with their own personal demons. Highly unique, this is a great way to experience the charms and talents of Reno.

Description by Image Entertainment:

Reno: Rebel without a Pause has been igniting audiences in New York and San Francisco since its cathartic beginnings last October at the La MaMa Theatre. Filmmaker Nancy Savoca (Dogfight) caught a performance of the outrageously provocative show and knew she had to showcase the "opinionated, radical feminist alternative voice who creates heavily improvised stream-of-consciousness topical monologues with incredible wit, political consciousness and common sense." Reno became the first artist to take the challenge of dealing with September 11th in public. After being woken up by the first plane crash eight blocks away, the show she was in the midst of working on stopped mattering. So she changed it to the only thing that did, immediately. Reno's rapid-fire witness to the events of September 11th and how they affected her personally and in the context of the world at large became an emotional and cathartic work that drew beleaguered crowds (including local policemen and firefighters). In light of great tragedy, Reno is searching for a way to process the complexity of the pain and find a way back to laughter. Rebel Without a Pause shows Reno at her brilliant best.
