...Grant does his boldest work yet....He is diabolically funny and unapologetically cruel...

Rating: C -- Star Hugh Grant and director Mike Newell reteam in this bitter-sweet backstage melodrama, set in Liverpool after WWII; it's a disasppointing follow-up to their smash comedy hit Four Weddings and a Funeral. Full Review

The most startling thing here is Hugh Grant as a De Sade in luvvy's clothing. Grant embroiders him with impeccable details, while writer Charles Wood, adapting Beryl Bainbridge's novel, conveys the basics with admirable economy.

Product Description:

A stage-struck lass gets more than her share of life lessons when she takes a job with an unconventional theatre troupe in post-WWII Liverpool. From the fey, sadistic director to the over-the-top leading man, our naive heroine treads (and stirs up) the dangerous waters of the theatre. A thoughtful dramedy from the director of "Four Weddings and a Funeral."

Description by Warner Home Video:

Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman star in director Mike Newell's (Four Weddings and a Funeral) engaging comedy about a star-struck young girl lured into the grown-up world of the theater. From a crush on the company's heartless director to her first sexual encounter with the show's biggest star, young Stella Bradshaw quickly discovers what it takes to make it in the theater. An intriguing blend of comedy and passion, this provocative story is a hilarious look at what really goes on when the lights go down.
