Product Description:
Best known for his association with legendary bluesman Robert Johnson, with whom he toured the south between 1935 and 1937, Johnny Shines stands on his own merit as one of the greatest American blues guitarists and singers of the 20th century. Shines continued to tour the south until 1941, when he settled in Chicago. Although he made recordings for both the Columbia (1946) and Chess (1951) labels, the sessions were never released. In 1952 Shines recorded what many now consider his best work for the J.O.B. label, but they never reached a wide audience and Shines, disillusioned with the music industry, sold his equipment and returned to his construction job. It wasn't until his inclusion on the now classic 1966 album, Chicago/The Blues/Today! that Shines was finally brought into the mainstream music scene. In the late 1960s and 1970s, Shines toured with Robert Johnson's stepson, Robert Lockwood, Jr. as the last remaining original delta blues musicians playing in the classic style. In 1974 Shines recorded the self-titled album presented here which featured him on guitar and vocals backed by a very capable band that included guitar great Phillip Walker with David II (baritone sax); Nat Dove (piano); Charles Jones (bass) and Murl Downy (drums). Finally available in the digital domain, all selections have been newly remastered.
