TOMATOMETER
Lee injects the film with warmth every time she’s onscreen, and Jah brings clear-eyed dignity to Esther’s yearning for any sort of community in her new home.
Rolling Stone
Dec 11, 2020
[A] heartfelt, three-dimensional portrait of an aspect of the immigrant experience rarely examined: the frictions, recriminations and regrets that happen when the papers finally come through but whole lives have been lived in the interim.
Variety

[The film's] strong cast elevates its portrait of the complex bonds between family and home.

Its gentle, understated tone belies Msangi’s careful attention to rhythm and detail...
Entertainment Weekly
Dec 12, 2020
Msangi employs a neat trick to capture the family’s coming-together in all its complexity. Split into three chapters, the film depicts their reunion from each character’s perspective, switching from the wide shot of the opening to a more intimate, point-of-view style.
New York Times
Dec 10, 2020
Saturated with rich blues and greens, the pic is visually vibrant yet subdued. It makes the Brooklyn neighborhood where the family shares a small one-bedroom apartment come alive without making it look like somewhere else.
Hollywood Reporter

3 stars out of 4 -- Writer and director Ekwa Msangi constructs this nontraditional narrative with an attention to detail for each of these characters.
