Entertainment Reviews:
The tale's mournful B-movie romanticism-and Pesci's introspective, crablike performance gets under your skin. In its moody, daffy way, The Public Eye gives off an authentic reek of artistic compulsion.

There are moments in The Public Eye that made me think a little about Casablanca, especially the earlier scenes when Bogart is still mad at Bergman. Higher praise is not necessary.

The film's visual rhythm is a key reflection of its story, so that neither the lush beauty nor the arresting squalor is gratuitous.

Essentially this is an undeveloped concept, an assorted collection of characters in search of an author. A true sign of its problems emerges from the increasing sense that until the end, the most explosive moments are the popping of flash bulbs.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Academy Award winner Joe Pesci stars as a brash, 1940s tabloid photographer whose camera leads him into a shadowy underworld of mob violence, unlikely romance and dangerous corruption in The Public Eye. Prowling the crime-ridden, midnight streets of New York, freelance shutterbug Leon Bernzy Bernstein (Pesci) captures lifes grim side in his lens - and dreams of the day his pictures will be recognized as works of art. When ravishing nightclub owner Kay Levitz (Barbara Hershey) lures Bernzy into investigating the thugs trying to muscle in on her business, he finds himself mixed up in a realm of black market scams and mafia gang war. Now, Bernzys either going to take the fall or take the one-in-a-million shot that could change his life forever.
