By the time of their fourth album as Utopia, Todd Rundgren, Roger Powell, Kasim Sultan, and Willie Wilcox had gotten the progressive-rock and fusion excesses--best documented on the sprawling ANOTHER LIVE--out of their collective system. The four were maturing into a quirky, experimental pop band that incorporated influences from predecessors like the Soft Machine and the Electric Light Orchestra with sounds not that far removed from new-wave contemporaries Wire and Talking Heads. OOPS WRONG PLANET is for all intents a pop album, but it's stranger and more complex than earlier Rundgren solo works, though considerably more accessible than any earlier Utopia album. The songs can be as jittery as "Love in Action," as rocking as "Trapped," and as heartfelt and soulful as the lovely Sultan showcase "My Angel," but the different styles mesh wonderfully. This is Utopia's first truly great album.
