Does this film reach the heights of Pixar's greatest films? No. No one is going to put this one in the pantheon. However, it is a gentle and gently entertaining reminder that even second- or third-tier Pixar means a high-quality movie experience.

The Maine Edge
[I]t’s a visually beguiling small-town nostalgia trip, as well as a perfectly pleasant fish-out-of-water fable -- literally, since it’s about a boy sea monster who longs to go ashore.
Variety
Less ambitious than most of the studio's films, "Luca" instead projects plenty of warmth, specifically in its study of identity, bigotry and the challenges young people face when navigating their anxiety-inducing entry into adulthood.

[T]he underwater scenes in Pixar’s new movie, LUCA, have a pleasing pastel shimmer: They’re so vivid, in their approximation of how light passes through the wavy blue, that you can almost feel the cool caress of the ocean against your eyeballs.
A.V. Club
[I]ts Mediterranean flavor and disarming lessons about the value of friendship and acceptance provide fresh charms, while the breathtaking beauty of the film’s environments both underwater and above the surface brings additional rewards.

Rating: C --
From any other company, "Luca" would be underwhelming and easily forgettable. Coming from Pixar, however, long the gold standard in animation, it's a disappointment, another sign the studio's stamp is not what it once was. Toss this one back in the water.

Product Description:
The 13-year-old boy Luca Paguro (Jacob Tremblay) finds himself in the beautiful seaside town of Portorosso on the Italian Riviera for the summer. There, he meets Alberto Scorfano (Jack Dylan Grazer), a fellow teenage boy, and together, they spend their days eating pasta, downing gelato, riding scooters, and going on endless adventures. Their fun, however, is constantly threatened by their fear of the townspeople finding out about their little secret: that they came from the depths of the sea. Directed by Enrico Casarosa.
