Behind The Lens
Rating: 3.5/4 --
A triumph of editing and narrative beyond "Are you kidding me?" visuals, Meru is a climbing story with context; biographies are woven in incrementally.

Meru is not just a mind-blowing mountain doc. It's a great character piece, a portrait of three daredevil climbers, each with his own stranger-than-fiction backstory.

4 stars out of 5 -- As a spectacle, it offers a vertiginous, first person view of events, but it’s equally immersive as candid psycho-drama of survival.
Empire
Rating: 2/5 --
Likely to appeal to the extreme sports market and leave the rest of us stranded.

Product Description:
This documentary follows top climbers Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk as they tackle the Shark's Fin, a treacherous 20,000 ft. near vertical point on Mount Meru in India. The ascent took much longer than they anticipated and the group was faced with challenging situations that included sub-zero temperatures, losing a large portion of their food and resting in sleeping bags that dangled precariously from the mountain. The group persevered and became the first team to reach the summit in October 2008. The film also contains an interview with John Krakauer, author of "INTO THIN AIR" and candid interviews with the climbers and their families.
