Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: 7/10 --
In Songs My Brothers Taught Me, Zhao and her team have created an emotionally compelling neo-realist portrait of a family and their community experiencing the stresses and pressures of post-colonial life.

PopMatters
Rating: 2.5/4 --
The slow-paced film includes all the expected social themes - drinking, poverty, broken families. Where Zhao excels is in the range of emotions she gets from a mostly nonprofessional cast.

New York Post
Zhao, a first time filmmaker, patiently observes these conundrums rather than passing judgment, and her stellar cast of non-professional actors delivers a great ensemble performance.

San Diego CityBeat
3 stars out of 5 -- [T]he restrained performances and luscious location photography are enough to make this a film worth exploring...
The Guardian
[I]t is an earnest, smartly mounted film about life on a present-day reservation.
RogerEbert.com
4 stars out of 5 -- [A] slow-moving portrait of a Dakota reservation that, like Zhao’s subsequent work, is told through a sublime mixture of non-fiction naturalism and poetic lyricism.
Empire
[T]he pic’s satisfyingly poignant sum impact makes its occasionally near-monotonous quietude pay off.
